What is aerobic swimming? Aerobics involves swims from 400m up to 1hour. Swims are timed, and points are allocated according to your age and the time taken, or the distance swum. Every swim earns points for the club towards the National Aerobic Trophy.
400m and 800m swims can be done in Freestyle, Backstroke, Breaststroke, Butterfly and IM. To gain points you must complete a set of 5 swims in the distance and stroke over the year. Each of the 5 swims must be done in a different month.
1500m swims can be done in Freestyle, Backstroke and Breaststroke. You can do one swim in each stroke per year.
½ hour, ¾ hour, and 1 hour swims can be done in Freestyle, Backstroke and Breaststroke. The distance swum (to the completed 25m) in the allotted time is recorded. You can do one swim of each duration in each stroke per year.
Aerobic swimming is a great way to improve fitness and endurance. It’s also a great way to train for Swim Thrus. As with all aspects of masters swimming, you only do what you are comfortable with. You may be able to complete the set of 5 x 400m Freestyle swims over the year. Then you may like to challenge yourself and try a ½ hour swim. Maybe you are super fit and can do all the swims and gain maximum points for the year. And if you don’t want to do aerobic swims, perhaps you would like to timekeep.
Trophies are awarded to the club members gaining the most aerobics points each year. Where and when? 1st and 3rd Sunday of each month at Melville Aquatic Centre 9am-11am (providing there are no other swim events on the same day).
